Chapter 1 - Breakfast

Later that evening, as Francesca and Alba settled into their room, Alba started typing a message on her Blackberry.
“Cosa stai facendo?” asked Francesca as she worked on the trim of a mother-of-the-bride dress for a client.
“I’m texting Roberta for breakfast tomorrow early morning. Mama. You know we need money. Like this? We can’t continue. You’re tired. I’m tired. We are a new Dolce & Gabbana. Fendi. Valentino. Neiman Marcus should have us. Bergdorf Goodman. All the high stores. Our own store in New York. Fashion shows. Press. For that, we need the money. Roberta she have money.”
Francesca nodded in agreement. They had been having this conversation for years now but could get no one in Italy interested in the business. So, they came up with a plan to choose a hostess or a client. After months and months of study and research - Alba’s husband Dante helped - they had landed on two possibilities: socialite and scion Nancy Howser, the New York trunk show hostess or Roberta Gardner, an investor and top client in Boston. Since Boston was first on the trunk show circuit, it was going to be Roberta first.
