Chapter 3 - Perla

Paola poked her head through the archway into Clara’s sewing vestibule, with the lovely side window and the doorway to a nice small balcony on the back of the building. It was actually quite cozy back there with the birds singing and the view of sky and trees. Much better than the alterations basement that Perla, her old seamstress at Andrea Lee, worked in for over a decade.

“Yes?”

“I no what to do with this. Miss Tootie’s pant is torn at the hem. She put her heel through it and now I have to cut.”

“What?! Why didn’t you say something during the appointment? Now she’s going to think we did this and want to return them!”

“I no think it a big deal. Was going to fix when I made last change to the hips. So hard, Paola, with one hip high and one hip low. Never going to be right.”

“She had a hip replacement. You know that, Clara. We’ve been over this a thousand times. Her alterations are going to be difficult - she is very particular and her hips are out of alignment. That’s just the way it is. BUT. I think we need to re-measure her….

“You told me not to take measures!”

“I know I did. Because you were going to measure her torso for the dress. That would’ve been more problems.”

“Not more problems. I do have a dress for altering.”

“Listen. Our first New York trunk show as a team is in two weeks. We will take everyone’s measurements’ then. I’ve already spoken to Roberta and Alba. I think we need to refresh the client files. They are using measurements from five years ago. I mean, they should really be taken a minimum of annually if not at each trunk show since they’re only twice a year.”

“Then I wait.”

“What do you mean, ‘you wait’? You have to finish these pants. It’s been three weeks now that Tootie’s waiting for them.”

“Is gonna be problem.”

“If it’s a problem again, we’ll deal with it. Just do your best with them. Or, if you like, I can have Perla come in and help you.”

“No. Don’t. I finish.”

“By the end of today?”

“Yes,” Clara glared at Paola. “End of today.”
