Chapter 4: The Duke's Children - Part Four

Vialon had in the meanwhile gone to Grif’s cabin and the two of them were discussing the situation.

“All I am saying, sergeant, is to check with me if Jendi gives you an order.”

“Don’t I always, chief?” replied Grif.

“Yes, yes, you follow orders, even as you make jokes about them, but when we are on the surface of the planet, verify with me anything she gives you to do.”

“What’s the problem?”

“You didn’t see it, but our manager lost control of her emotions on the bridge. In front of the crew!”

“Pushed her too far this time?” asked Grif with a grin.

“None of your insolence!”

“Sorry, sir, no disrespect intended.”

“Just mind my words,” said Vialon as he left the sergeant’s cabin.

Grif looked at the door vacantly for a few moments as he tried to make sense of what his military leader had told him. Vialon might order the soldiers, but he had to obey Jendi, so what was the point of him checking with Vialon if Jendi gave an order?

He got up and went to Janen’s cabin. Grif and Janen had become friends on this voyage, as much as a soldier and a sergeant can be friends, and they enjoyed their discussions in off hours.

“Janen, got a moment?” he asked as he opened Janen’s door.

“Sure thing,” said Janen. Both soldiers had blonde hair, but Janen’s eyes were brown to Grif’s blue. Janen also had about 7” in height advantage over the sergeant, something he enjoyed teasing him about.

“Has Vialon talked to you about the manager?”

“No. Why?”

“This must have just happened,” mused Grif.

“What? What happened?”

“Oh, the manager said some harsh words to Vialon and now he’s in a mood.”

“Wouldn’t be the first time.”

“That’s true, isn’t it?” said Grif. “I’ll have to keep my eyes on this. Hey, anyway, whatcha reading?” He sat down and looked at Janen’s book.
