Chapter 9: The Magicians - Part Ten

They occasionally saw a farmer pass them on the road, but were basically undisturbed the rest of their walk back to the forest hiding the ship. They reached there, as predicted, as the sun was setting, and when they finally saw the ship behind the tree line, they saw Wenden wave at the entrance and then rush inside the ship to say something before returning back out and greeting the travelers.


“Janen was about to send a search party,” he said.


“We are on time,” said Jendi, “though we are cutting it a bit close to the deadline I set. Anything happen of interest while we were gone?”


“Anyone approach the ship?” asked Vialon.


“No, sir,” said Wenden. “No sign of anyone in your absence.”


“Probably not too surprising,” said Sevenser. “This is a farming community, not a place where people need to go on hikes in the woods. They get enough exercise with the plow.”


“That’s all you saw?” asked Wenden. “Just farmers?”


“We will give a full report later,” said Vialon as he climbed into the main hatchway.


“Yes,” said Jendi to Wenden as she passed him, “just farmers.”


When the last of them entered the ship, Wenden sealed the hatch.



I HOPE YOU HAVE ENJOYED WATCHING ME WRITE THE FIRST DRAFT OF THE CANDELL.


AT THIS POINT I AM PAUSING SO THAT I CAN REWRITE THE FIRST 9 CHAPTERS WITH MORE CHARACTER DEPTH, CONFLICT, WORLD BUILDING, AND SO ON. I HAVE NEVER BEFORE DONE A FIRST DRAFT IN PUBLIC, AND WHILE I ENJOYED THE PROCESS, I NEED TO PULL BACK AND RETHINK SOME OF THE STORY DETAILS.


LOOK FOR THE COMPLETED "THE CANDELL" SOMETIME IN 2022.
